The now commonplace 'reluctant user of AI' is a crucial component in the normalisation of this predatory tech.
By implying a lack of agency, the reluctant user seeks to obscure their choice of (supposed) convenience over all else. And so where not truly imposed (like the workplace), it is best read as a sort of confession.
Using big AI while openly and truly not caring about the commons, a habitable planet, healthy minds and societies, is honest, if nothing else.
@JulianOliver I've been a reluctant user before. At one point everyone around me thought AI was inevitable, and they convinced me for a while. I thought I had to "learn to use AI" to stay employable long-term. Later, my employer mandated AI use. Most employers in my field now expect AI.
It all adds to the normalisation, yes. I now avoid AI, but I expect I'll be required to use it again someday. And I work with others who use it.
Any suggestion for de-normalising it before I start a new career?
