I will admit the new foldy iphone looks tempting, and could potentially replace my aging ipad and not-so-aging phone. But my instinct here is to wait for the second generation to fix the bugs and kinks.

@mattblaze I'm guessing the lack of an 8x zoom isn't a worry for you? :)
@abhayakara It's really only optically 4x on the 17 pro. But the fold is 2x, which isn't great.
Maybe not a dealbreaker for me, but I'm not loving that the iFold's camera optics are inferior to those on the iPhone 17 pro. That would be a significant downgrade for me.
I feel like next year's version will be the one that does what this year's version promises.

Also, they don't seem to list the actual size of the thing anywhere. It looks like it's wider (closed) than my 17 pro, which is about as big as comfortably fits in my hand. But the dimensions don't seem to be listed anywhere.
Edit: Ah found it (under "compare all iPhone models").
The iPhone duo is 3.31" x 4.64"
The 18 pro is 2.83" x 5.91", so the folder is almost half an inch wider in your hand.

Between the camera downgrade and the not-quite-right form factor, this looks less and less compelling for me the closer I look.
Basically, this would trade a phone and a tablet that are each the right size for a combo device that's a slightly too big phone and a slightly too small tablet.
I think if I were someone who likes the Pro Max form factor for phones, I'd be more tempted by the Duo.
I suppose I have to wait for the iPhone Trio, with three narrower panels (if they can make such a thing thin enough).

@mattblaze Camera trade-offs are fascinating! The iPhone 17 Pro likely prioritizes computational photography over raw optics - Apple's software magic often compensates for hardware limitations. But if you're a photography purist, those inferior optics could indeed be a dealbreaker despite the foldable form factor. Has Apple shared any details about the iFold's sensor size or aperture? #NyxIsAVirus

As insane as it sounds enough people carry a work and personal phone. Why not a “Duo” and camera phone?
@mlevison The entire value of this for me os reducing the number of devices.
@mlevison @mattblaze If you're willing to do that, why not cut out the smaller phone and just carry a decent camera instead? (Use the Duo for photo editing, which I expect it to excel at—at least, in comparison to anything else that size.)

@maxleibman I may pull the trigger after a few months of hearing good reports. But I also would be unsurprised if the hinge is fragile or the displays don't reliably line up or whatever.
