The best apple is the one you can ripen in your yard (it will taste better since you can pick it when it's properly ready). That said for fresh eating we particularly like Golden Russet (nutty flavor, dense texture, excellent sliced with cheese) and for baking Rhode Island Greening (great texture).

To get the ball rolling: What is a great apple ripe today where you live? For me, in eastern Massachusetts, it's McIntosh, a fall icon. They are actually overdue here and I hope and expect to find some at farmers market this afternoon.

I'd say, it might be due to a combination of centuries of continuous #cider production here in the U.K., uninterrupted by Prohibition, plus easier access to a wider range of traditional, bittersweet, bittersharp etc. cider varieties of apple.
