back on my EV buying bullshit (I did not want to buy another car for at least a few more years) and finding that my hard requirement for drivers seat & mirror position linked to a profile, so my 150cm wife and I (185cm) who share the car aren't constantly adjusting the position of the seat and mirrors every few days - isn't that common in many vehicles!
@georgeharito yeah it's not as common as I thought either - like the BYD Atto 3 and Dolphin even the new updated one, doesn't have it at all. But the BYD Seal and Sealion 7, both have it.
@decryption ... reckon we slowly need a mandatory minimum "feature" list for modern cars enforced by ACCC kinda thing: doors that can be opened from the outside without requiring electric power, rearview camera, buttons/knobs for certain functions (the so-called "fuck the touchscreen" mode), driver profile for seat positions/mirrors, quarterly map updates for GPS system, ban on E.T.-phone-home traffic over WiFi/Phone to countries-that-we-shall-not-explicitly-name-here, etc. @georgeharito
making a list of cars with:
* Under $50,000 drive away new or used
* More than 400km of WLTP range (ideally 450km+)
* Drivers seat & mirror positions linked to multliple profiles.
* 360-degree camera
Nice to have:
* Non-flush/electronic door handles
* No glass roof
* Traditional keyfob option to lock/unlock car
* Under 4400mm in length
* ADAS systems that aren't a piece of shit
* Be able to view charge status remotely, ideally without an app that requires Google Play Services on Android
@decryption it's crazy how profiles aren't standard on everything with electric driver's seat. Seems like a final no-brainer step
@arichtman @decryption Why make something free when they could sell it as an add-on tied to an app linked profile.
@decryption
Not sure about the price where you are but otherwise BYD Sealion 7 should match most of these if you can stretch to 55k. (Or find it used)
A bit longer (4830) and only the seat + side mirrors adjust. Or check the smaller ones - should use similar systems.
@viraptor the Seal and Sealion do, but the Atto & Dolphin do not :(
@decryption I need this list please
@arichtman about half way
@decryption @arichtman ... When did BMW and Mercedes drop in price relative to everything else?
@decryption "ADAS systems that aren't a piece of shit" - haaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahaha ! Nice one.
@otte_homan to be fair, the ADAS in my Volvo EX30 is excellent- never bothered me at all, perfectly done
@decryption wait, many EVs don’t even have key fobs? what do they have? 🤔
pls tell me it’s not some shitty “use an app to unlock your car” or “when your phone or watch comes close it auto-unlocks”… 🥺
@itgrrl yep, it's an app on your phone, or the phone itself (using the UWB chip in the phone) - or just an NFC keycard that you tap. Or the keyfob has no buttons and it's just an NFC proximity sensor that doesn't work half the damn time.
I remember back at uni I had a friend who went through nine PowerBooks at the on-campus Apple Store, because each one had some sort of issue that pissed him off (dead pixels, screen discolouration, keyboard feel was off, trackpad didn't click right etc) - at the time I was thought he was just being annoying and a crank. 20 years later and I totally understand where he is coming from now.
I spend too much time in my car and I'm tired of putting up with the little daily annoyances that really shouldn't be there just because someone at Volvo couldn't give a shit or cut a corner to save money.
@decryption you should have picked the XC40 with me ;)
@decryption Might be an idea to consider what telemetry is sent back to the manufacturer or others. And any other user-hostile data collection or transmission.
@tubsta yep, lots of cars have it, but many I assumed would, don't! being able to adjust the rear view mirror automatically is very nice
@decryption I know what I’m saying next is not that helpful, but I’m amazed that seat positions being saved to key profiles isn’t really a thing in EVs in 2026? My 2020 BMW 330i has it (I had gotten around to setting up my wife’s key a week or two ago and it’s great), this isn’t a high bar to overcome I think?
