Now I’m downloading the pkgsrc tarball so I can take a swing at building the tools for the toolchains I’m trying to target, because they’re not among the binary packages built for netbsd on arm64 generic, and honestly why would they be, who in their right mind is setting up an open-source cross-compilation toolchain for Ada on netbsd/arm64? Nobody. Not a soul. My mind ain’t been right since the late 1970s.

Years ago I was begging xpressif to give me aarch64 tooling for the esp-idf toolchain and they were like “what? no. no. someday, but no. go be normal or something.”
I bet that tune changed when a Tim Apple had his employees mob them for that tooling, but did they remember old Sundog going to bat for them before they even knew they were gonna go into aarch64 business? No, no they did not. Not even a thank you card.
Anyway, I could have theoretically set myself up with a cross-compiler environment to build this cross-compilation toolchain on my much more powerful x86_64 laptop running linux instead of trying to build it natively on netbsd on what’s a glorified upcycled cell phone from the mid-20teens, but where would the fun be in that? Both paths are gonna be frustrating as fuck and both have about equal chances of my succeeding, so let’s take the path that leads to “look at those four little Cortex A-53 cores cook! look at ‘em go!!”
right up until I notice I have not set up any swap because I’m running off a microSD card as it is and maybe I should throw a usb stick at it to format for swap before I kick off any ill-advised compilation tasks.
pkgsrc is still untarring so it’ll be tomorrow before I actually try building the packages, so I will in fact have plenty of time to allocate some swap on something more durable than the yo random used some unknown number of times microSD card that the operating system is running from.
somewhere around here I have the right emmc modules to put on the board - I wonder if it’s just that there’s not one in the device currently or if there’s one in there and it’s bad. regardless, once I find my emmc bag, I should be able to swap one of the appropriate sort in and copy the microsd card over to make it ever so slightly more durable
