I've been using Jellyfin for my media library.
My Jellyfin server is on a VPN with a web server, so I can connect to it over the internet/share access with friends/family.
The biggest thing that this gets me is the ability to access my media library from my TV and from the TVs at my office, etc.
This works really well for movies and TV shows, and I've been using it for music and podcasts.
Do you have any suggestions for a similar setup that would work better for music and podcasts?
@ajroach42 I moved the audiobook/podcast section from Jellyfin to Audiobookshelf, and it does those _so_ much better. It has Chromecast support, not sure about other TV things.
(Plus, we didn't use the Chromecast bit yet, because for us, the big screen is for movies.)
@ajroach42@retro.social ive used these in the past with varying success, but ultimately ive fallen back to using Apple Music and iPod syncs because I never need access to my full (~80gb mp3 VBR's) at any one given time:

The biggest goal I have with all of this is to listen to my music library and podcasts (and to watch video podcasts) on my television.
@ajroach42 Geexbox was my first media player back in the day. It was basically just mplayer launched full screen with some osd menus and setup screens. It fell over when xbmc came out and they tried to add themeing and more features.
I took a radxa 2F, and hacked up a thing that's just a config file that defines some paths for media and some network shares, a folder for podcast RSS feeds, a cron job that downloads the latest episodes of anything in that folder, and a TUI file browser that launches MPV on the selected file.
The basic concepts works, it's not painful to use, but I miss the cover art.
Because at home my TV is connected to my sound system, you know?
But every time I go down this road, I come back to: Set Top Boxes suck.
And recently, I've also been thinking about Computers, you know, and part of that has been being angry about set top boxes.
I've been thinking about and talking about set top boxes every few months for the better part of the last ten years, because existing set top boxes are privacy and surveillance nightmares.
And after having thought about this stuff, and built a bunch of toy implementations over the last ten years, I think I've decided that I want the following features:
- RSS support for video and audio podcasts
- Local file playback (over USB)
- Miracast receiver
- Network media playback (dlna, maybe?)
I think that might be it.
As someone who has his whole music library in flac and mp3, it really bugs me that jellyfin won't merge different formats of the same song.
@gbargoud Oh I hate everything about how music works in Jellyfin, but the complete lack of deduplication is pretty bad.
@ajroach42 for music specifically Navidrome works pretty well for me
@elomatreb @ajroach42 agreed, I also use and love navidrome
@mav @elomatreb This looks nice, but I don't think it would be compatible with my TV or set top box.
