between DHH, brodie, that fucking ex-googler Linux is Best guy doing an anti-Palestine disinformation campaign on fedi, lunduke, liam of gamingonlinux, linus torvalds himself… it really feels like a lot of the loudest influencers and personalities in this space are mask-off assholes up to no good, doesn’t it? it really feels like they’re doing that thing fascists do where they normalize casually doing horrid shit in a space.
@zzt There's a strong libertarian element in FOSS, which isn't surprising. Anti-institution, don't tread on me types. There is often overlap there with right-wing ideologies, at least here in the US.
@thestrangelet @zzt also, lets not forget, the YouTube algorithm is optimized to platform closeted (and overtly) fascist “libertarian” white dudes, to make them the most succesful YouTubers. I’ve lost count how many succesful tech YouTubers turned out to be fascist.

At this point, if you have become successful on YouTube, I treat you as suspect, because there is something about you that makes The Algorithm like you.

@zzt @davidgerard I mean, hear me out, would it be unethical to start a company that claims they can upload your conciousness to a computer, even if in fact that cannot happen. Like, would that be more unethical than "cryogenic suspension"? I ask because they aren't leaving me behind _fast enough_ and I'd like them to please loose the capacity to interact with me as rapidly as possible.
Cryogenic suspension companies don’t decapitate you until you’re legally dead (though most of them are shady as hell and, even if the magical resurrection technology that they promise ever exists, they’re not going to be able to use it because they’ve let people turn to mush). You’d need something quite convincing to get people to use it. That said, given how impressed many of these idiots are by LLMs, you might be able to generate a demo that produces speech that mimics some recently dead person and convince them that this person underwent the process. An LLM that mimics Donald Trump or Elon Musk would be fairly easy (as would a short Prolog program).
Alastair Reynolds’ Revelation Space universe had a backstory that involved someone creating ‘alpha-level simulations’ that did destructive scans of someone to create an AI version of them, with the same rights as the original. To avoid voting weight issues, it also included DRM that prevented duplication of the program. Which was a problem because it meant no backups, and when they all went into catatonic loops, they were effectively dead. I always wondered if this was actually a bug, or if it was just an efficient way of eliminating 50 annoying rich people. That would be easy to duplicate: ooops, the context window has become too big, uh, I mean they’re having a psychotic episode as a result of failing to adapt to their new status, and just producing nonsense, I guess we have t9 shut them down.

@davidgerard @david_chisnall @errant @zzt Prolog is a language for logical programming. You can build yourself a dataset of facts and rules, and then omit any piece in a logical clause to show all solutions that would solve this puzzle for the facts and rules you have in your database.
For example, first define the facts that David hates LLMs and fascists:
hates(David, LLMs)
hates(David, fascists)
Now you can query your database to find out what things David hates:
hates(David, ???)
LLMs
fascists
Alternatively, you could "search your database" of facts for who else also hates LLMs:
hates(???, LLMs)

I called liam (of gamingonlinux, not the other one) out for a real bad LLM take that he decided to double down on. for some reason this made him delete his account and start purging posts, which drew a bunch of attention to his old posts. and of course people found and took screenshots of a bunch of bigoted shit he’d said in the past.
@zzt what is it that Brodie actually does? there was a period where all youtube wanted to show me was him shouting at his microphone in his bedroom?
