Postulate: the amount of space available in a double bed does not increase linearly with the size of the mattress.
In fact, it often does not increase at all.
I suspect it tends to a constant.

@stefano, according to the Python's Theorem, the free area in a double mattress shrinks towards zero, every time you move.
So yes, your intuition is right. The free area is a constant that does not depend from the length and height of the mattress, but from the length and height of your body :-)
