Actually vinyl records sucked, hard. Entire relationships crumbled under the sheer personal economics involved.
People went to college just to listen to other people's dirty, scratchy, warped records.

In the mid-1980s I was in a nuclear physics lab where we had to start the equipment 15 minutes before any work could be done to warm up the vacuum tubes. I asked the lead why, in the 1980s, we still used tubes?
Answer was because the voltage needed to run the scintillation counter would fry solid-state transistors
