@aral I was born in western Europe and lived in the west and north for my entire life.
It took me a long time to recognise just how skewed the conversation is and the blatant errors in our history education as well as how media and politics portray what is happening today.

Probably the first wakeup call I had (despite having had to deal with racism forever) was how we were taught about WWII and the Holocaust. The story was only about Jewish people but they were not the only victims. I'm a queer person and only years later I recognised just how LGBTQ+ people and other communities were equally targeted. I was never taught this.

From there on everything sort of unravelled for me when it comes to western values and what we are supposed to stand for. Lots of 'self-deprogramming' that still continues.

Sadly it just keeps being confirmed again and again that the west is beyond hypocritical and continues to assume a supremacist attitude (just in politer words these days).

I do think the genocide of Palestinians is a wakeup call for people, though there are a thousand examples prior that should have done this. One worry I have is that when Gaza becomes less the news of the day we all forget about it again.
