Still pretty amazed that some tweaker was in my replies yelling at me that Jurassic Park doesn't have a larger meaning because I quoted Jeff Goldbloom's character to point out that AI is a scam.
Like it takes a special kind of fuckwit to yell at me for something the Daily Mail did.
@AnarchoNinaWrites Michael Crichton was pretty on point in the original Jurassic Park novel about "thintelligence", only for this to get picked up on later by the US popular press in the last 2-3 years about "AI".
@bms I mean I wasn't even talking about that angle, but yeah, you're right. So the guy was wrong on BOTH factual and interpretation grounds. Despite the fact that at no point in time was I even SAYING "AI is like Jurassic Park."
Like, the guy literally typed "as far as I can remember, the movie was about cool dinosaurs" like I said at any point "Jurassic Park is actually about AI."
No I didn't. I was comparing these nazi billionaire cultists to the people who opened a GIANT DINOSAUR THEME PARK WITH NO SAFETY GUARDS PURELY FOR PROFIT.

Like, speaking of misunderstanding movies made for idiots - is this guy even aware that the corporation that built the park are the BAD GUYS in that movie? Like did he fucking MISS that somehow?

Like even the mad scientist who made the dinosaurs is portrayed as reluctantly bowing down to the corporations profit demands and scrimping on safety. The fucking POINT of the movie is "greed is bad and can lead to disastrous, but wholly predictable consequences."
How the fuck did you come up with "the movie is about cool dinosaurs?" Like i don't even care, I wasn't even talking about what the movie means ffs, but how are you yelling at me when you got what tiny children understood, wrong?
@AnarchoNinaWrites The novel probably did more than the film to popularize dynamical systems theory through its chaos outreach, IMO. Jeff Goldblum dressing in black and spouting truisms about it in-character (perhaps doing character penance for his semi-evil role as Seth Brundle in The Fly) whilst taking cash from Apple in the "Think Different" campaign, not so much so. But I have to take my hat off to Wayne Knight's depiction of Dennis Nedry, the bent Bastard Operator From Hell (BOFH)
Your point remains though. It's a case of epistemic exceptionalism driven by corporations, and again, having read the novel in the early 90s before seeing the film (my mum was signed up to a book club offering for a time), Crichton underlined this in the original medium.
