you may recall that in the US, and maybe other countries, telephone numbers had the form
MUx-xxxx
where the 1st two letters were your exhange
anyway, a tony part of NYC is Murray Hill and the snooty residents were very upset in the 1980s when the phone company stopped using MU as the 1st two digits as everyone who matterd knew that an MU number mean't you lived in Murray Hill

I too remember the Tom & Nat video and it gives me the chills every time I think about it...
@misty@digipres.club this doesn't even go into the fact that a very small number of areas have 6 digit area codes, but the first five digits are also an area code for elsewhere. Really confused me when I first encountered that.

@misty I'm having flashbacks to that Tom Scott freeform video where he started with "American phone numbers confuse me" and then 20 minutes of him and Natalie trying to explain all the intricacies of the UK system.
