Retaining clip broke off old RJ45 plug at the end of a long cable, in a location where replacing the plug would have been very difficult. 3D printed a little clip on thingie (lots of predesigned models to choose from) that provides a positive lock in the switch socket. Printed 4 of them in 20 minutes. Made them green. Of course, the government would really like to ban 3D printing, and there are already laws enacted moving in that direction for government monitoring and completely unworkable specified blocking of your printing activity. Both parties are in on this one. Fascism on parade.
@lauren Huh. Never thought of that. I usually just toss the shorter cables or reterminate the longer ones. But I definitely have times and places where those aren't ideal solutions. And we have a 3D printer at work, so I guess it's off to thing-i-verse to find some STL.

@agreeable_landfall Yeah, makerworld has a bunch of them too. This cable is quite old and mostly inaccessible and the plug ends in a very cramped location. Reterminating it would have been a real hassle.

@lauren LOL. I have server closets which are fully spaghetti wired (they were neat at one time, but as things change, folks don't take the time to keep them neat). And some where the room to maneuver is limited. So these would be like a get out of jail free card.
And when I solve breakages fast, because the cable now stays in place, I can get raises and promotions.
@lauren Just don't start printing 3D printer parts. Then you'd really be up shit creek.
@CreakyLadder Of course printing 3D printer parts is how the earliest 3D printers were designed and promulgated, and it is still routine to 3D print various add-on or replacement parts for current 3D printers.
