The US recently published guidance that children of foreign diplomatic officers are now qualified to apply for green cards. It was presented as a plus, but from my understanding of it, lower level foreign officers who had children born here always got automatic citizenship like everyone else.
Yet another poorly understood reduction of people’s rights.
@skinnylatte I knew someone growing up who was the child of a diplomat (who was born in the US). He ended up applying for a green card and US citizenship, in spite of having both a US birth certificate and an A2 (I think) visa.
He said that he could have probably gotten away without applying (and that may diplomatic kids did), because a birth certificate is (or was) accepted as proof of US citizenship under almost all circumstances. But if someone investigated, it wouldn't hold up.
@skinnylatte But I believe a disadvantage is that as soon as you apply for a green card your A visa and diplomatic immunity goes away/
