I save a folder full of compliments, on the advice of someone a while back. They said to look at it when I’m feeling less than. So smart.
The owner of the publication where I worked in my first real design job gave me a letter of recommendation when we moved away. He called me “an exceptionally talented autodidact.” I didn’t even know what that meant, so I looked it up. Man, it felt good to include that letter when I was applying for jobs.
Second one, because it was as funny as it was lovely. When I was 18 my girlfriend’s parents wanted to hear my band’s record that we just released. It was playing in their car and she asked “how many drummers are playing on this?” I told her it was just me. She said “it sounds like three of you.”

@markwyner @PhoenixSerenity my now partner said “you were written by a woman” and it felt very, very nice to hear.
@markwyner @PhoenixSerenity I don't know that it was the best compliment, but I count it as a memorable one. Probably because as teenagers, positive comments make a huge difference.
I'd done a year of art history, then went on an exchange year to London. Different school system means different learning opportunities.
Anyway, we were reading Paradise Lost, and the description of Pandaemonium contains:
Built like a temple, where pilasters round
Were set, and Doric pillars overlaid

@markwyner @PhoenixSerenity from an old school friend who went on to own and operate a sound system and put on EDM nights, so I value his opinion in this matter: "you're an excellent dancer". Ah, good times! Still am, if I say so myself...
One of my students once told me I reminded him of Elizabeth Warren.
@markwyner @PhoenixSerenity A veteran magician at an event in Warwickshire watched me do a card routine, looked at me with a somewhat bewildered expression, and said, "You don't do anything the way it's written up, do you? Not even the basics".
Perhaps it wasn't exactly a compliment, but I decided to take it as one.

I've had variations of this compliment all my life: "Why would I hire you, when you could do my job better than I can?" (variations: "This job would bore you," "You'd quit in six months.") I usually enjoyed the interviews, being highly social and loving humanity, but needless to say, I've never had a real job.
