Hence the warning at the top of my Important Toots webpage that says DANGER DANGER THESE POSTS ARE UNREADABLE BECAUSE MASTODON IS SHIT
@ifixcoinops I have an ugly workaround, if you'd like?
@ajroach42 is it gonna be, link to the last post in the thread and tell people to scroll to the top? 😁
@ajroach42 aye by all means I'd love to hear the ugly workaround, it'll either be useful or funny
@ifixcoinops yeah, link to the last post works.
Another ugly option is to link to the post as viewed on an instance that isn't having this issue. (admittedly, this is a very ugly and not guaranteed workaround, but it does usually work.)
@ifixcoinops either way, it's mostly a local server/admin issue, more than a mastodon writ large problem as I understand it.
@ajroach42 I mean the fact that it's even possible to set mastodon up this way is kinda smelly
(don't pile more work on your plate)
Anyway it's been years since I found out that you can't do long threads on mastodon and expect anyone to see them but here I am still posting long threads on mastodon like a right plonker hoping that one day someone'll fix that bug or I'll figure out how to migrate all my posts to some other fedi software that has working threads
@ifixcoinops see what you have to do is edit the source code of your mastodon instance to raise the character limit (because it's not a config option in the admin panel, noooooo) and then you can just write long rants in a single post like me
and then chain them anyway because you had additional thoughts after
@brooke @ifixcoinops 50,000 character limit on retro, and we still thread with the best of them.
@ifixcoinops I'm exploring options in this space rapidly. I do not want to be administering mastodon in another 5 years, the last 10 have been enough.
Imagine reading a blog post that goes on for five paragraphs and then just ends abruptly with the last paragraph saying like
"Later on, that simple and reasonable assumption would lead to two ruined pairs of underpants and a fire extinguisher refill."
And then it just ends. You'd go "Huh, that's a weird place to end a blog post," and the ten people who knew that there was more if you clicked the post date would never tell you hey click the post date
Weird how I've already had three people tell me that they use a third party app and can read long threads just fine, when I said early on in the thread that I can also read long threads just fine in my own third party app and that was the whole problem, the bug was hidden from us because we use third party apps
To reiterate, the mastodon website, y'know that you look at in your web browser, has broken threads and doesn't even tell people to download an app to unbreak it, it literally just stops early on in the thread **with no indication that there's more thread to see**
Like y'all see the problem here don't you, you can imagine that some people might want to link to a cool thread, thereby showing that cool thread to people who don't already have a third-party app
Alright example, my solar thread at https://retro.social/@ifixcoinops/116371043987387118
If I open that in my usual mobile browser, which is logged in, I see the whole thread. If I open mobile Firefox, where I'm not logged in, it stops 12 posts in, at "I did look into newer panels, you can get them for a great price but you've typically gotta buy ten at a time and shipping would be like $400" without even so much as a "read more" link
