The US declared measles eliminated in 2000. It's back.
One reason is simple: nobody remembers what measles does to children. When a miracle fades into the background, the machinery that produces it starts to look unnecessary.

@Daojoan The same “forgetting” happens to the miracle of Democracy in many places. Most people alive in Western democracies have never seen an alternative, and scream for “efficiency” over consensus. In the end that is how the anti-vax anti-science sentiments are getting to power too.
Some people seem to seriously believe that if you stop paying attention to a problem, it disappears. Covid, climate change, anything. Maybe we will get to launch rockets by not paying attention to gravity.
