Just watched the intro video of the fully redesigned Audacity, and haven't played with it yet, but it does look pretty nice on the surface. Anyone have a link to a current write up about why this new update is actually super bad?

Dammit. Does a pre-takeover version still exist?
@tomjennings there were a few attempts at community forks: @tenacity being the main one
@liaizon I don't, but from what I can tell they're gradually integrating other MuseScore-adjacent products.
“MuseHub is the official distributor of Audacity”
And this may bring some of the Dark Patterns over from MuseScore: https://gadanidis.ca/blog/musescore/
Maybe it’s the ultimate guitar connection that makes me skeptical lol
@liaizon short version: software was purchased by corporation who shoved a bunch of telemetry in and will continue to do so, probably.
@ajroach42 @liaizon It's run by the Ultimate Guitar sleazebags.
@be @ajroach42 I don't know anything about Ultimate Guitar
@ajroach42 while telemetry in your audio editor is obviously really stupid and not wanted are there other big concerns you remember? It seems they are still releasing it under GPL tho the website and github something feels very fishy
@liaizon The things I remember most clearly: They added telemetry and 3rd party data sharing to the software, they own other shady software, they banned people under 13 from using the software in violation of the GPL, and they had ties to or are owned by a Russian company which raised some concerns for people at the time of takeover.
I don't know anything about the new UI, but I assume their whole deal is a play at an eventual encapsulation of the commons.
