Today would have been Ivan Illich’s 100th birthday.
I have a complicated relationship with Illich and his work, which was epochal for me. The complication lies in the fact that while his partisans continue to regard him as tribune of a minor current, in so many ways it’s now clear that his thought carried the day. And if we’re being honest, it’s hard to conclude anything but that we are not the better for it:

@rooftopjaxx I’ve written many times about Wilson. It’s less complicated: knowing what I do, I can’t cite him, and dislike it when I see others blithely doing so.
