This is a new rule for myself (which I need to communicate to students as soon as I stop being royally pissed off about it).
If your recommendation request to me is AI slop, the answer is automatically "no."
Do not slop me asking me to write Real Words for you. It's rude as all HELL.
I wrote a thing for the tips-and-tricks page in my current undergrad course. I'm back-and-forth on the word "lazy," but otherwise I think I'm okay with this.
... yeah, I think I'm keeping "lazy," even though it isn't the only (or even, I think, the main) reason students do this.
They need to know how I perceive slop, because I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who perceives it this way.
(They do it because they're scared and because they don't have templates for this kind of request. Which I get! But they still need not to do it!)
More broadly... it's pretty evident lots of people, not just undergraduates, use chatbots to avoid a perception of unacceptable risk when they're out of their comfort zones.
Coddling oneself that way is such a dangerous thing. Yeah, taking risks and fucking up are hard and unpleasant, but the sooner we learn how, the better.
@dsalo I think this use of lazy is absolutely fine. It's strong enough that they really should get the message.
I was also interested in the list of things you ask for. The assignment one is really interesting. I think the one that I usually ask for, which you don't have, is a copy of the job advert, person specification, or job description (or whatever it is) for which they are applying. But perhaps your query about what should be bigged up is sufficient to not need this.
