The side-effect of this is that a browser needs some truly ridiculous amount of optimizations just to make the performance of this mess acceptable.

This adds tremendous complexity to the codebase, hampers any attempt at building alternative browsers and ultimately still consume a huge amount of resources on users' machines.

@spook I also dream of it. Fedi gave me an appreciation of protocols rather than applications. We can absolutely rebuild the internet but not with the existing protocols and the perverse incentives that have been baked into them. We could dramatically trim down HTML/CSS and possibly even drop JS entirely and still be able to implement the bulk of what matters on the net.
