@Elizafox Back in 98, when I was volunteering at a Linux conference, a woman I know pulled me aside, pointed at a guy, and said, "whatever you do, never be alone in a room with him."
A few hours later, I saw a picture of the keynote speaker and realized it was the same guy. It was ESR.
FOSS has *always* had this problem.
@mxjaygrant he used to talk about all the amazing orgies and sex parties he attended at Linux conferences and there’s strange essays on his website about meeting young women in Asia that just reads like sex tourist pick up artist shit. He never hid it, I don’t know why no one ever said anything

people who speak out are seen as ruining "the fun"
if they hit a nerve, they can expect to be harassed and exposed to violence for years, if not decades
they can expect that their "peers" in the tech industry will belittle them and talk about them behind their backs, and refuse to involve them in projects
they can expect to be blackballed and lose their tech careers
