Once again, I'm reminded of how much less well I understand election systems than someone who just spent 15 minutes with a search engine.

Hm. Is that directed at me, Professor? For what it’s worth, I was the sole software architect for 50% of the U.S. Vote when you were still in grade school. There was nobody else for my half. It was just me. If you’d like to confirm that, DM me.
This was before Diebold. I had nothing to do with any of that. My employer was caught up in a situation a few years after my stint related to complications in West Virginia. Parties in govt. modified the rules for counting votes so as to require the code to delete the votes of Black people.
My point, if it wasn’t directed at me, is regardless that Senator Slotkin’s concerns [see the YouTube video that I linked] aren’t a “fantasy”.
I trust that I’ve spoken respectfully enough.

But in my experience people who take personal offense at comments that weren't actually directed at them are often revealing quite a bit about themselves.

well, you probably read books and did science stuff, like experiments. the internet is computers, so it's obviously way more reliable.

It's especially rewarding when I spend time carefully answering someone's election systems question and they respond with "well, maybe, but I'd rather hear from a *real* expert."
Anyway, if you want to *become* a real expert on election systems, I know of no better way to start than to sign up to be a poll worker with your local elections office. They need the help and you'll learn a ton!
In Australia, it's a good job. Paid ok, at least that's what I'm told. For a Saturday's work.
@mattblaze I don’t know if citizens realize they can call their election office and get a tour and an education about the entire election process.
@Beachbum Usually yes (not formally, but they are overwhelmingly friendly), but right before an election is a very bad time to ask.
