I have been looking forward to this day for weeks. today is the day that my husband and I could harvest the carrot
not a typo. There is just the one
the others fell victim to the raccoon and to other .. perils (#picathecat )
I had such high hopes for this carrot! I knew that we’d need to cut it in half and share it so each of us could get a little bit of the nourishment, but it had grown quite thick … but now having lifted the carrot? I wonder will we survive?

We had a similar problem last year..... we don't grow carrots any more ;(
At least our rabbits ate the leaves, but that's pretty much all we could do with them ;(
I guess it may depend on your soil, but I'm sure my parents managed to grow some in the same garden in the past :(
Also, we had 3 whole "eating" apples from 2 apple trees this year 😭
....however our Bramley apple and Damson tree are full of (sour!) fruit.

Those lovely Italian plums (my favorite!) will ripen up on your kitchen table. Just let them sit for a while, and check every day for soft ones to eat

Still, Damson ice cream is amazing. I need to make some more, although it's more like sludge than ice cream when I make it 😅
Sour jams are really nice I hear?

I'm going to harass her into making us a crumble this weekend - it's a good excuse for lots of custard 😋
@futurebird this is why I'm not a believer in "grow your own" becoming a primary source of calories for most people.

I think the key is to grow things that are easy for your situation or it will be an uphill battle.
For example, Parsley grows well here, which is great as it's expensive for a small amount, and our rabbits love the stuff.
We let it self-seed and now we have a big patch of it.
Our strawberries send out runners so we've been able to make quite a few new plants this year, ready for next year.
We tried growing cauliflower and broccoli and all we got was leaves 😞 Again, at least the rabbits liked them...
It will take a while to find out what grows well in your garden.
Our fruit trees are usually ok, so at least we have that....
