On 9/11, I carried this book as I fled the collapsing WTC. Every page was coated with the deathly dust. I bought another and tried to read it but it struck me as so self-indulgent, at this moment of all moments. It spoiled fiction for me for a long time. This tribute to it strikes me as equally self-indulgent.

@jeffjarvis You're not alone. There's a reason I chose this exact book as an indicator of John Roberts's "privileged white man" failings: https://c.im/@msbellows/116783543381637927
