I didn't renew my subscription for 404media.
I was an early subscriber, and they have written some wonderful stuff, so this is no reflection of the lovely people who run it.
I guess that I just got weary of reading about Flock, AI, and what different places in the USA are doing.
@neil Yes I noticed too that here have been less articles on science, human interest and fringe topics compared to the beginning. I can only assume that US people really need to read about the topics they’re covering nowadays because they won’t necessarily see it elsewhere. But it leaves their international readers a bit wanting.
I wonder if I see enough doom and gloom to be reticent to read even more, or to need to see fundamentally the same issue with such a frequency.
So while part of me wishes that there was a UK-focussed publication that I could support, I think it goes deeper than that.
@neil I decided to manage the negativity in my life a good while back.
I try not to engage in rage farming and I've stopped watching YouTubers who just want to tell me how shit the world is.
I've also stopped watching TV series which are just doom spirals as a plot device.
I like to stay informed, but I don't need to be constantly barraged by negativity.
@bobdvb I stopped reading the BBC news at the start of the year, and I do not miss it one bit!
@neil I read the occasional post, and I know they complain about people on fedi being the worst leeches, but also I don't want to read that much of their stuff 🤷
Not a reflection on the quality of the stuff, similar to your (un) motivation I think.
Absolutely, I will happily resubscribe if I find that I have made a mistake and missing reading lots of their articles. I appreciate that journalism costs money. But increasingly I was skipping their posts in my RSS reader, in favour of other people's writing.
@neil Have you looked at The Nerve? https://www.thenerve.news/ _Very_ UK focused, with some seriously good investigative stuff, and a good arts page.
My longest term subscription, fwiw, by quite some margin, is @girlonthenet :)
Her posts are definitely not doom and gloom!
