Am back on the ward, two stents heavier. Still slightly loopy from a cocktail of midazolam and fentanyl, because: outpatient heart surgery, i guess.

@cstross Whoo-hoo. I had that same coctail a few years ago for a procedure. Memory gaps galore and an entire day of strangeness.

Congrats, and glad to hear it went well. I got to have one of those last week, too, but my case then pivoted to full multi-CABG (and that's in no way outpatient)

@cstross is that same day discharge? Modern medicine never ceases to amaze that they can get you in for stents or hip replacement and discharge same day.
@kura yes: i arrived at 10:30am, i should be going home at 9pm (and the last four hours is just observation).
@cstross Had stents at the Infirmary about 10 years ago. I was kept in overnight while the band holding the wrist incision closed was being loosened. Take it easy for a week or two.

@cstross amazing. Had something similar last year (although not as hard core). Went in for 0800, under the knife by 1000, out by 1300. Mine was just abscess surgery on my back though... Not literal heart surgery. That's nuts.
Main thing is, I didn't need a coronary artery bypass graft. Which is grand, because it's the difference between a one hour out-patient procedure (today) and a week in hospital then three months off work recovering afterwards (NO THANK YOU).
@cstross Congratulations. It's one year since I underwent 4XCABG + AVR and while I'm great now, last September was pretty rough.

Nevertheless, award yourself a few days of definite quietness.
Clever though we are now, you've still been beaten about, drugged, and just possibly stressed a little, and it tends to bounce up when the drugs wear off.
@cstross the "this is horrible but could have been way worse" health problems, I empathise. Also relieved you don't require the full surgery. We need a pint or two and bitch about older bodies falling apart, when you feel stronger
@cstross Congrats on that! I also prefer to stay out of long-term hospital stays.
(I was over the moon when orthopedic surgeon said 'I'd prefer not to operate on you')
Happy to hear your waiting was over and (it sounds like) the procedure was successful.
@jackwilliambell Did I mention the Scottish NHS yet? No fees, and free bus travel to/from the hospital as I'm over 60.
@cstross Best wishes for a smooth recovery. My father got some put in a few years back and felt hugely better within a day/
