Hello DNS experts!
What happens if domain names become too unreliable due to political interference from Trump and future US administrations?
Can we use IP numbers instead?
Do countries have to set up totally separate DNSes to have online sovereignty?
Do individuals have to dust off the BBS model?
@FediThing As someone who knows people from DENIC: Maybe. I mean, there's layers like I2P or Onion addresses, which are as hard to remember as IP addresses, but all the more anonymizing.
You could use a top level domain owned by some company or non profit outside of the US (I am sure those exist?)
One way or the other: can't escape the government. Even IPs are owned by RIPE in Europe and some other org in the US, not sure if those can be taken away the same ways domains can. We may actually have no option other than hosting as much infrastructure on our own including DDoS protection...
I can accept government interference being impossible to avoid on large scale infrastructure, it just seems very unwise to have one single government with power over the infrastructure of all other countries?
@FediThing 100%. Whenever I was at ICANN conferences, they talked about their multi stakeholder model. I don't get it, but it seems like there will always be one stakeholder with the power to do stuff like this.
Technically speaking, isn't all that ICANN does (when it comes to independently hosted domains) provide a list of where to find the DNS of some TLD? Doesn't that mean we could, technically, built independent infrastructure doing so, hence fracturing the internet somewhat?
