@imyke @siracusa I really appreciated this first episode 🙂. There are a lot of technical insights that are clearly explained.
But I have one big criticism: it is too narrowly focused on Apple’s situation. IMHO, their biggest issue was not that they had to have an OS with mem protection and multithreading. It was that everyone else had one.
Including the much derided Microsoft. Obviously NT, but they also planted the seed for Win9x as soon as 1988 with Windows/386. Gosh, even Win3x had a better underlaying than Mac OS 9 😅
@xtof I think we do mention that several times, but maybe it’s in episodes you haven’t listened to yet?
@siracusa You’re right. There is a big segment about Microsoft and their progressive transition to a modern kernel in the second episode. In contrast with Apple. I should have been more patient 😅
One note. I am not sure that, even with a better strategy and management, Apple could have implemented a smooth transition like Microsoft did. Indeed, Windows 95 was only possible because of the V8086 mode of the 80386: it was literally made to virtualize old softwares. Win95 is built around it. I do not think that PowerPC had an equivalent.
