In the last couple of days I’ve seen a lot of references to the conundrum of separating art from the artist as it relates to software devs leaning into fascism.
I don’t think that’s useful.
The conundrum is for sure a deep one but in general art is not instrumentalised in anything like the same ways as software. Art can be appreciated on its own aesthetic terms and personal isolated enjoyment of it has a limited overspill.
Software is not the same…
…The purpose of software is almost always to DO something. And DOING instrumentalises and changes minds. People post-rationalise what they have fallen into the habit of doing. And software scales very readily.
I’m not saying that it’s unproblematic to like Gill Sans even though its creator probably abused his own kids, or that it’s ok to like the music of the horrible anti-Semite, Wagner.
But fascist-made software is a different class of predicament
