@jonny as a heavy Calibre user this thread bummed me out so much. It is seriously load bearing infrastructure in my life. 😭

I just haven't updated it in many years, well before the AI turn, because I never needed to. It just transfers the files and manages very simple metadata, and I never noticed it was extraordinarily strange under the hood. I respect artisanal quackery that works and has a human shaped error surface, idk I remember writing python 2 code and doing cursed shit too. the problem with artificial quackery is that it crumbles and shatters in unpredictable ways.
Its amazing how depending on the timeline of when this happened this is either "someone's life's work fighting against the former badness of the python packaging ecosystem which should be feared, respected, and never repeated" or "pink slime of a magnitude that begs an apocalypse"
In case its unclear, this was very very pre-slop and I think its sort of badass in a horrifying kind of way

@jonny if I remember correctly, when asked about the end of support for Python 2 and his plans for migrating to Python 3, the reply was "that's fine, I will maintain Python 2 by myself". When I saw that I made a note in my mind that |calibre is âery cursed technology and I should not approach it. I think I was right.

@jonny I often think to myself, "you know who really nailed dependency management? JavaScript, they really nailed dependency management, so I'll just make a Python using JavaScript".
