I want to share one of the statistical observations I wish more people would talk about. This is about crime rates. This is about murders.
Over the past four decades the number of murders in NYC has fallen even as the population has increased a little. There were 2,245 murders in 1990. Last year the number was 309
But what has not changed? The likelihood that any murder will ever be caught.
The NYPD is less forthright about "clearance rates" but they seem to hover around 70 to 80 percent.
For some reason no one talks about this?
Not your tough on crime conservatives, not your prison reform people. There are a few victims groups that bring it up, but I find the number astonishing.
About 1/4 murders just ... get away with it?
I think this could be addressed by shifting funding from useless compstat "show of force" patrols and targeted harassment... I mean policing to having more detectives and more money to review evidence and get detectives better training.
Due to programs like "CSI" the public thinks in a big city like NY our police are doing every test and working hard on every case until they solve it with the best technology.
In reality there are a bunch of items in storage such as rape kits they can't afford to process. And your average detective has a poor understanding of the high tech tools they could be using. They need more training.
Lastly detective case loads still suck. Murders shouldn't be a rush job.
