If I were a musician and releasing my first album, I would not name it after myself, because that's confusing.
I definitely wouldn't name my _first three_ albums after myself, because that's just taking the piss.

According to Wikipedia, Gabriel's concept was that it'd be like a magazine. Just pick up the latest issue of Peter Gabriel. Don't worry about getting a specific one.
Peter Gabriel evidently didn't know any comic book collectors.

I remember years back noticing when he (or his label) finally backpatched titles onto those albums. I mentioned it to the guy at the record store and he said that fans had had to resort to using catalogue numbers to specify which album they wanted, so this was a huge improvement.
(Honestly, what would have been wrong with "Volume 1", " Volume 2", and "Volume 3"?)
@suetanvil I know they got called by their album covers informally. I wasn't sure if they ever got official expanded titles.
The funny thing about him thinking of them like magazines is that magazines are ephemeral. Nobody buys last year's magazine, they just buy the current issue. That doesn't seem like a healthy way to view one's music.
