Apple Turnover
@siracusa as much as I wish it were true that money comes from virtue, it seems that Ambrosia's reward for two decades of making beloved and fairly-priced software was insolvency
@nicklockwood When they were making great software, they were doing pretty well!
@siracusa If you really do have the power to change Apple, I feel like you squandered here. You should have written a poignant post about the loss of real desktop Macs. 😝
I guess I should have titled it Apple Ternover.
@siracusa Great article, but please, please stop citing the Socrates "quote" that's (i) not the correct translation and (ii) pretty close to the opposite of what Socrates means.
"...οὐκ ἐκ χρημάτων ἀρετὴ γίγνεται, ἀλλ᾽, ἐξ ἀρετῆς χρήματα καὶ τὰ ἄλλα ἀγαθὰ τοῖς ἀνθρώποις ἅπαντα..."
We need to read "...ἐξ ἀρετῆς χρήματα [γίγνεται] ἀγαθὰ...": "from virtue, money becomes good." It's not that virtue makes you money, but that virtue (is the only thing that) makes money (or anything else) good.
@natemeyvis I was quoting their home page—accurately!
@siracusa That's fair. Please excuse the implication otherwise. You still put a lot of rhetorical weight on the idea throughout the piece, and most readers will think you're citing legitimate Socratic provenance for the claim.
(I hope it goes without saying: I'm a huge, huge fan of your work!)
@siracusa that seems like it should be reserved for when Ternus retires.
May I propose Ternup Day?
@siracusa The page has been Tern'd! 😀 🙌
@siracusa that's only slightly longer than app review _amirite_
