I have always wondered why Winston Churchill's last name was spelled with just one H.
Assuming his lastname was from a place called Church Hill, it seemed odd to me. So today I looked it up.
It turns out, his family is named after the village of Churchill in Oxfordshire. And in that village the old church is NOT located on a hill, and the name has nothing to do with that. Instead, the village used to be named Cercelle, which became Cerzhulla, which became Chirchehull, which became Churchill.

@randahl but what is the origin of the towns name? A bird (a small duck, the French use Sarcelle), a musical instrument or toy (making a rattling sound) or the cross (heraldy, other spelling sarcelly)

My guess is that since Churchill has long syllables, the middle consonant does not double.
I'll leave it to a true linguist major though.
