What's good Windows GUI backup tooling to back up to a Hetzner storage box? (So: (S)FTP, SCP, Borg/Restic, WebDav)
I mainly want to offer family storage on my oversized storage box, so:
Needs a UI and should ideally need ~zero maintenance after setup. I know there's Backrest (restic UI for windows). I found Kopia, too, which sounds older/more stable, but I never heard of it, so no idea if it's good …
Looking at the Kopia UI a bit, I'm tempted to just buy a handful of Arq licenses and be done with it tbh.
@rixx Yeah, Arq is what I use. It just works. Has the open source restore client too, in case you ever need access without the paid client;
@sindarina Ohh, that's good to know. Yeah, I think then I'll just buy a 5-pack of licenses and hand them to family & friends
@rixx The Kopia-UI is a major red flag. However, it's really just the UI and ideally you only use it once for initial setup and be done with it.
Kopia itself works like a charm and the possibility to simply e.g. fuse-mount different timestamps on a linux machine, is a really easy and convenient way for verifying things work as expected.
Alternatively, I'm a big fan of borg. There are also plenty of 3rd party UIs available. Isn't as standalone as Kopia, though.
Using both with SFTP as backend.
@mirco Yeah, I use borg for my own stuff pretty much exclusively and love it. Like I said, I'm only looking for Windows tooling for family right now.
I don't think that I'd call the Kopia UI a "red flag", but it's def not looking as smooth as Arq.
@rixx The Kopia UI neither is intuitive for an average user nor for a more technical person (I mean, probably a bit more, but it's still really bad). Also, it hangs every now and then, does not always reflect the correct state, etc. Given backup software is something I want to just work and be able to rely on and KopiaUI is not just a 3rd party project, but actually endorsed by Kopia, I still consider the UI a "red flag". Though, Kopia itself works like a charm.
Still no borg UIs for Win? Pity.
@rixx My family is always like: I want to do copy it manually, so I see everything is there. Maybe a webDAV is just OK in your case?
@blub Nah, manual backups get forgotten. Something that runs daily and auto-versions is best imo (and my family agrees, thankfully). They can still always look and see what's backupped!

@rixx I have had some good “set and forget” experience with Arq, although it’s a paid tool.
@v0tti It's paid "per computer", it says, which is a bit rough, as at least my mum would need access via desktop and laptop. 60 bucks one-off I can totally see, starting with 120 though is a bit much. (Or 100, I guess, which buys you a 5-pack …)
