To someone who lived (albeit shortly) in a "communist" authoritarian state this sounds eerily familiar.

pretty sure it's not the communism that causes problems for common people, it's the authoritarianism.
@alienghic there is a reason why I put "communism" in scare quotes. The relation between communism and authoritarianism is for a much longer conversation, as is the question of alternatives to capitalism that are not communism (as that's a false dichotomy).
