The early 2000s. It was a heady time.
The wide open cyberspaces were promising to disrupt all aspects of commerce & communication, and the very nature of business itself seemed ripe for transformation.

Oh the folly of believing Internet technology is somehow able to sprinkle down on industry like a piquant spice and ensure all the grossness of capitalism fades away.

I think it's important to document this stuff because there's a tendency in the media to treat anything happening in tech now as sort of a continuation of how tech has always been rolled out since the dawn of personal computers in the 80s, and that's simply not true at all. It's become a very different scene. (And yet the seeds *were* there and we missed it. We need to grapple with that so history isn't doomed to repeat itself again…)
@jaredwhite @theinternet Yeah, with all the research I've done in the past weeks, I more and more realize how this is so much the case. Sometimes definitions are changed to resolve confusion, sometimes definitions are changed to cause confusion.
