MapQuest’s app surges to No. 1 in Navigation after refusing to rename Lake Ontario https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/31/mapquests-app-surges-to-no-1-in-navigation-after-refusing-to-rename-lake-ontario/
@Sarahp Maybe it's time to look at MapQuest again. I used it in the old days, before Google maps even existed.
@Sarahp i love that they are doing this
@Sarahp @kimlockhartga Thanks, MapQuest.
Reminds me of when they trolled Trump for renaming the Gulf of Mexico with a link that let you rename it whatever you want. https://gulfof.mapquest.com/
While keeping the correct name in the app and on their maps.
@Sarahp I didn't know they had an app! I downloaded it and it allows my icon for myself to be a rainbow unicorn, so already I like it better than anything else I was using.
@Sarahp doesn't work in the UK (the mobile app) unfortunately.
@Sarahp oh the memories of MapQuest
OSM still trustable...
@Sarahp awesome.
Dear map apps: if you can’t spine up, make an app option that says ‘show the names as if I am from ___.’ Frankly, this also mitigates zooming into a faraway place and getting map names in something the user can’t read, whether that is Urdu, kanji, English, or Farsi.
From the Mastodon post :
"MapQuest has changed hands several times over the years, having been acquired by AOL shortly after going public. It then ended up with Verizon for a time, as a result of Verizon’s acquisition of AOL. In 2019, Verizon sold MapQuest to internet advertising company System1."
From : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System1#History
"In October 2019, System1 bought MapQuest from Verizon.[12] Cory Doctorow opined, as soon as MapQuest was bought by AOL (which was later bought by Verizon), that it was doomed to die. Verizon had dumped MapQuest to System1 for such a small sum, it was "not material enough for Verizon to file paperwork".[12]"

😄 (Sorry fans of Cory Doctorow, truth needs to be told)

@Sarahp For some reason I thought they had caved on the Gulf of Mexico, so I didn't choose them as my replacement for the complicit companies.
I just checked, and I was wrong 👍🏿
I've been suffering along with the mediocre HEREWeGo app.
Hopefully MapQuest is better than that, and doesn't take us on a crazy route...
