@randahl Hello, @randahl . Back In the day I used to use an app called Navfree. It allowed me to download offline maps, so I didn’t have to be connected to the internet. By now, there are more apps that allow you to download offline maps, to use that with the GPS on the iPhone.

@randahl I still use HERE WeGo for navigation in a car. It's Dutch.

@randahl On iOS I like Pocket Earth, Magic Earth*, OsmAndMaps, maybe CalTopo (includes topographical data)

* I’ve used this for navigation but others might do it. There are dedicated hiking apps, like AllTrails.

Kort downloades "som i gamle dage" - du vælger hvilke landsdele du vil have, ikkenoget med at forsøge at lokke den til at cache data, offline navigation er default, også når du har en internet forbindelse.

CoMaps er open source, og OpenStreetMap er bruger-genereret data - som Wikipedia men for kortmateriale.

Osmand hvis det skal være nørdet, men jeg foretrækker den simplere brugergrænseflade i CoMaps.

@randahl As others have already pointed out, the OrganicMaps fork CoMaps seems a good candidate. FOSS, Good user experience, uses OSM maps, you decide which maps you upload for offline use, tracking-free.

Has replaced Apple Maps completely on my devices, good on iPhone and iPad.

If you don't mind the German descriptions, the privacy-focused Kuketz IT Security blog has tested a lot of (mostly Android) apps and is known for their precise analyses. CoMaps is on therir recommendation list: https://www.kuketz-blog.de/empfehlungsecke/#navigation

@randahl Definitely one for @CoMaps - it’s pretty decent.

As a very, very, very pedantic point: Google Maps in this instance is supporting the US Government, and directions passed down from an elected leader of it. It’s the right thing to do. The way to fix it is for the American people to use their democratic right to vote.

(What would certainly not be the right thing to do is for Google to put itself above the law and the US government.)

@randahl i would suggest comaps (comaps.app). Works local maps (openstreetmap). and works for car as for hiking.

The only downsite (on this moment) it has no trafic infomation.

@randahl CoMaps s good, if not perfect, for driving. I imagine it would be excellent for hiking as its deficiencies for driving relate to identifying as many unique residential & business addresses as its commercial counterparts IMO.

For Sweden the best choice of maps for hiking (but not so much for finding services etc) is Lantmäteriet's Min Karta, which also can do offline caching of a big area

I use MapQuest when driving.

It's not perfect but they name bodies of water correctly.

I use Osmand+ on Android, and it is very good. It provides you a simple interface to download maps to use them offline and contains a lot of information, including, in some countries, public transportation routes (I want to go from a to b, using buses or local trains).

The one thing I don't like is searching for a specific address, but it's totally livable and it does it's job very competently. Made in Germany, based on open street map, which is a UK non profit.

Sounds like a use case for OpenStreetMap. There should be apps for the iPhone.

@randahl Using CoPilot GPS here. Using that because it downloads maps, and it lets you set up a vehicle profile for better travel time predictions.
