I really would have thought that "the copyright status of LLM outputs is an open question" would be enough to stop open source projects away from it but apparently not

like, all the other issues with this tech are things people can go one way or another on, but historically major open source projects are sticklers about licensing and rights and copyright assignment etc. this feels like a bizarre lapse
literally the entire reason individuals with no legal budget can do open source is the warranty disclaimer and patent terms protecting them from being sued. do you want to expose yourself to potential piracy cases from big tech companies because I sure as hell don't
the big AI vendors might have decided copyright doesn't apply to them but they definitely still believe it applies to *you* and they *will* do something about it if the price is right
