Got roped into helping an elderly neighbour pick plums off multiple trees. Definitely didn't have time to do that, but it was really nice chatting with her, she let me pat her hairless cat (!!) and now I have probably 50 pounds of really tasty plums that I need to figure out what to do with (a very good problem to have).
@sundogplanets
Umeboshi is great but I don't think you can use ripe plums for that.
@sundogplanets plum-ginger jam! 😍
@sundogplanets donate to a food bank or soup kitchen?
@sundogplanets I suggest Spiced Plum Jam. So delicious!
Seriously, HALP I HAVE SO MANY PLUMS
@sundogplanets take them to a farmers market
@sundogplanets
Are you going plum loco? 😲
@sundogplanets Can you somehow turn them into alcohol? How hard is that to do? Just brainstorming, as I assume there's only so much jam and plum butter one can consume...
@sundogplanets we were just gifted a dozen plums and didn’t know what to do with them all, I can’t even imagine. Good luck!
@sundogplanets put em in a shared ice box and they’ll disappear
Cats expression: "What do you want me to do about it?"
@sundogplanets haha, if I had that problem I'd be making plum butter 💜
@sundogplanets If you stone & halve them they freeze well
So bag up & freeze portions for pies, crumbles or any other baked goods you may make in future
I believe you can make a decent home made wine with them but I've never tried that
@sundogplanets lots of excellent suggestions! Let me add plum wine
@sundogplanets Got a load of plums too from a neighbour down the road. They’re coming out far to early here.
Got a distillery nearby?
Wait, so if I pat a hairless cat will I also come by 50 pounds of really tasty plums?
I wish I'd known this sooner!
@sundogplanets Plum jam.. plum sauce. Plum chutney?
Also, isn't petting a hairless cat kind of like having decaffeinated coffee? Isn't feeling the soft fur the point of the petting?!?! 🤪
@ai6yr companionship for somebody with allergies?
@MsMerope @ai6yr Ehh, cat allergies are more complex than that - the protein that triggers the allergy is specifically found in their saliva and skin oil glands. Theoretically, because hairless cats don't shed fur that can carry the proteins they'd be slightly less allergenic, but not necessarily by enough to be okay for someone who's very allergic.
With that bring said, Cornish and Devon Rex cats are less allergenic even if they have fur (IIRC both breeds can also be hairless, but are not exclusively so), because they don't shed as much and tend to not need to groom themselves as much either.
But - I'd imagine hairless cats do better in extremely hot climates, as long as they have adequate sun protection.
@dartigen @MsMerope @ai6yr She said the hairless cat can't go outside in the winter because it's too cold, and can't go outside in the summer because it gets sunburned! Also the extreme cold we get here in Saskatchewan made the cat grow a tiny big of fuzzy fur on its back. Apparently the breeder (somewhere warmer, I guess?) was very surprised by this.
The cat happily climbed into my arms. It felt SO WEIRD. Kind of like holding a salamander, but very warm.
Now you will always remember this day fondly. 😊
@sundogplanets Put them in your icebox, a famously safe place to store plums.
@sundogplanets I used to have a plum tree. For a number of years when there weren't calls to save water here in L.A. and I was able to irrigate it well I had masses of plums every year. Actually far, far too many and I couldn't get them all and it would cause quite a mess. As everyone cut back on watering the tree eventually had to be removed, unfortunately.
@sundogplanets if you make Chinese food, try doing a plum sauce - easy and really tasty
@sundogplanets Happy about the plums but straight up jealous about the hairless cat.
@sundogplanets Have you ever made those Hungarian plum dumpling things? I've always been curious about them but I never have plums and time to cook simultaneously.
@epicdemiologist @sundogplanets I have a plum tree that is very generous and I have never heard of Hungarian plum dumplings, which sound amazing, going to find a recipe right now...
@epicdemiologist @sundogplanets OMG THEY'RE (potentially) GLUTEN FREEEEE
@teadrinker @epicdemiologist Huh I'll have to look that one up...
@sundogplanets @teadrinker My cookbook calls them "szilvás gombóc" and describes them as "a potato dumpling with a pitted purple plum inside it, and a melted sugar cube inside that."
@sundogplanets plum-chili-sauce is the way to go. :o)
