Hmm, the Linux Foundation - @linuxfoundation - has a thing at https://x402.org, payment infrastructure using the HTTP "402 PAYMENT REQUIRED" status code that:
1. Is said to "empower agentic payments at scale",
2. Specifically lists as an advantage that you can ignore Know-Your-Customer legislation,
3. Accomplishes payment with stablecoins, and
4. Is said to be backed by Google, Visa, AWS, Amex, etc etc etc.
Just me, or is there a bit of a funny smell here?

In the new version of @clipperz we are gonna use the 402 status when the client hasn’t payed the required hashcash toll to access the resource.
The current version is alreading using hashcash (it has done so since the very first release in 2007) and it has recently proved VERY effective in handling a lot of weird requests we have been receiving lately (not better identified as we do not do log analysis).
@timbray @linuxfoundation Well, there's nothing unusual about a company forming a standard around its existing technology. Of course, its reliance on stablecoin is concerning, but What bothers me is what's not mentioned: royalties. "x402 is free for the customer and the merchant—just pay nominal payment network fees." Of course, "nominal" is a red flag, but beyond that, no mention of RAND or costs for the party that implements another (competitive) payment network.

"A bit of a funny smell" is quite the understatement there. That smells like a corpse that was left out for a week somewhere hot and humid
@timbray I can’t believe they actually list the KYC process evasion flat out. That’s bonkers.
@timbray Well as a legit EU small-emoney-issuer we (Entropay, circa 2025) did have to KYC (KOC?) but the merchants using our clients' virtual cards did not, which was interesting. Seemed to be at least in part merchant-specific policy.
