@yoginho I was one of those who recommended Debian to you a while ago - sorry!
I didn't expect this to happen, but then, I admit that I made the mistake of old-school decisions as well: I selected Debian a few years ago purely on its technical merits. I picked a product without even examining its development process, even though I knew that the process matters.
I would also consider it a safe bet , due to its history, without knowing the process they operate.
But that is the problem. We the users do not check or cannot check how something is created.
And that is why we need to move away from the artifact and start talking about how the artifact is made. We need to "open source" the community, make it transparent etc.
Where do you guys see this going? I can't handle the effort/time for another distro transition (esp. not if it's something labor-intensive like Gentoo), so I'll stay where I am atm. But what about longer term perspectives? Will there be a general anti-AI Linux fork? Or do we all have to read up on NetBSD? Or will we all just swallow the brown pill after all, because resistance is just too much effort, and go with the slop ... ? 🧐
@yoginho This is a long-term worry, not an emergency. So: take time to explore, time to think.
The only Linux distro whose development process I know is Guix. No AI policy yet due the lengthy and imperfect consensus-finding rules. While the discussions continue, I will see if I could move to 100% Guix (which as of today I do *not* recommend).
I'll also look at NetBSD and smolBSD, at least for my self-hosted cloud server. And see how the BSD family evolves driver-wise.
@yoginho And, of course, I'll watch what the rest of the AI-unhappy world will be doing. Maybe we will see new distros, or better hardware support for systems like NetBSD, because of growing developer investment.
