Birthday brunch tomorrow for my daughter.
Fam knows how hard it is for me to handle more than 2 or 3 people at a time. They don't all get it, tho some of them do. Anyway, the assumption is that I'll no-show.
I'mo show, tho. Just to fuck up expectations.
My daughter is my step-daughter. I didn't even meet her until she was 19 or so. She's only 10 years younger than I am.
But we just clicked, more or less instantly.
That was 35 years ago.
Last year, she told me that she thinks of me as her dad. I was honored, of course, but also somewhat weirded out. I mean, we are very close, definitely, but "dad"?
I am such a fuck-up. Broken in so many ways. An inveterate liar. Raised racist and sexist, still even now shedding those habits. I'm really an asshole, if you didn't know that already.
My claim to "fatherhood"?
She says I was the first older man in her life who did not try to fuck her or hurt her or control her.
From my point of view, that's a pretty sad and low bar. From her point of view, that's a father figure.

@GeePawHill I think that "dad" means she looks up to you. You DO know that there are things in you that can be looked up to.
