There seems to be a subset of Americans who get actively offended if you admit that you actually prefer to get around in a local area in other ways than using a private car.

I've been saying for years that in the US, getting your driver's license is the new rite of passage.
@juergen_hubert You should see how that set responds when I say I've neither owned, nor driven, a car since 2001 ... because I haven't had to.
