@mekkaokereke I got pulled over on a Missouri freeway. Saw the cop car pull out the median just as it occurred to me I was a little too close to the Camry ahead.
I was in a rentcar, a Corolla. I pulled all the way over, put on the flashers, and sat there with my hands atop the steering wheel, not looking back or moving around or reaching for anything.
The cop stepped up to the passenger side of the car, and I couldn't roll the window down. I was pushing the correct button the correct direction, but the window stayed up. Meanwhile, the cop is repeating himself with increasing irritation: "Sir, LOWER THE WINDOW."
I said, loudly but toned not to sound aggressive, "It won't go down! I'm opening the door!", and I reached, slowly and open-handed, across the car to open the door.
I explained it was a rentcar and the window controls didn't seem to be working, and the situation de-escalated; I agreed with him I'd been following the Camry too closely and he gave me a warning and let me go.
The whole time, and even more afterward, I was keenly and uncomfortably aware that very probably the only reason it went and wound up as it did was the colour of my skin. At any of numerous points, a POC likely would have been differently and badly (mis)treated or worse.
(turns out someone had previously engaged the window lock, which was severely misdesigned by Toyota. The right way is to lock out control of the windows by all switches _except_ the driver's; this one just disabled the power windows entire, and the lock switch was hidden from easy reach or onvious use. I would bet people have been arrested for obstruction and resisting, and have suffered roadside punishment for noncompliance, as a result.)
