Always better to read IMHO, not being a gamer, but you do you much better than anyone else!

@farah one plus is that you can source and read them all public domain so youβre not enriching the problematic artist
and itβs mostly short stories and novellas, especially the mythos βstuffβ - usually told in a kind of unreliable narrator or glimpse of something incomprehensible voice. its interesting to read the source and see how little is actually there, how much is left to the imagination and/or was actually fleshed out by derleth and the generations of writers that followed

He's also been very dead dice the 1940s & most of his writing is not overtly racist. But there's no denying he was extreme even by the standards of his day, though mellowed slightly in his final years.
If you're determined to read his works as racist then they will be. Eye of the beholder & all that.
