The root cause of feelings of hopelessness is the narrative that software is something that needs to be continually updated. There is a sliver of truth to this, but it's largely just bullshit. Get ready to accept that it's bullshit. Err on the side of assuming it's bullshit.
If you use Linux or any free software ecosystem, you have whatever you've been using up til now, and aside from a few very specific places, you can just continue using it. FOREVER.

On multiple levels, the systems we use are built upon obscuring this truth.
Linux being a monolithic kernel leverages users' need for new hardware support to push gratuitous changes nobody asked for. But unless you're buying nerd toys to add to your existing computer, or switching to a new device, none of this matters! You already have working support for all your hardware, and thus this pressure to upgrade is irrelevant!
