I figured that was the story being told in the song.
She doesn't come back. She leaves him. The Dear John last verse is final even if it sounds sweet and conciliatory. The song is *her* story not his. And, even as a young'un, I suspected her tone was that of somebody trying not provoke a new bout of bad behavior.
Fast forward 30 years ...
"Somebody I Used to Know" is the exact same song.
@afewbugs and Dexy's Come on Eileen from the same era was about underage sex (although Kevin Rowland did later mention it was more about teenage lust mixed with Catholic guilt and nothing actually happened (Eileen didn't even exist), which having been raised Catholic myself does seem believable..
@afewbugs It really is. He starts off with "Look at what I've done for you!" and she's all, "I mean, we had some fun, but you didn't really give me shit."
